Basso Palta III: Launch Case Study

Ready to Erupt

The Brief

How do you launch the third generation of Basso’s best-selling bike? Obviously, you take the world’s leading cycling media to the famed and historic Mount Etna in Sicily. Basso tasked us with proving the Palta III is one bike with two souls, capable of handling everything from smooth tarmac to jagged volcanic ash.

The Stage

  • The circumference of Mount Etna is 93 miles. Mount Etna covers an area of 1,190km² and is over twice the size of the next largest mountain in Italy, Mount Vesuvius.
  • The name Etna means “I burn.” Coming from the Greek word Aitne, Etna’s name can be translated to mean “I burn”. It is believed that Zeus buried a hundred-headed monster named Typhon, underneath it, and his restlessness is the cause of any eruptions.
  • In Sicily, it is known as Mungibeddu. Mount Etna can be referred to as a number of different names. In mainland Italy, it is not unusual to hear of the volcano being called Mongibello or Montebello, which translates to “beautiful mountain”. However, with a slight change in the language, Sicilians will refer to the volcano as Mungibeddu.
  • The soil surrounding the volcano is extremely fertile. Thanks to years of eruptions, fertile soil has been left surrounding Mount Etna. This is the perfect ground for growing everything from citrus fruit and grapes to vegetables, including asparagus. In fact, due to the land being so good for cultivation, it is believed that almost three-quarters of Sicily’s crops are grown in the immediate vicinity of the volcano.

We swapped the rolling hills of Bassano del Grappa for the lunar landscapes of Sicily.

  • The Vibe: Raw, unpredictable, and quintessentially Italian.
  • The Terrain: Black lava sand, steep technical climbs, and high-speed descents.
  • The Idea: If the bike can thrive on the "Muntagna," it can do anything.

The Activation

The key to a good bike launch is having the right people in the room. By aligning the client's preferred key territories with a tier-1 media hit list, we ensured riders across all target markets were served with high-quality reporting at the launch moment.

We worked with Basso to create a hit list, and set about securing attendance. The camp followed a format we've used before: one week, with two separate groups of journalists to ensure a depth of brand connection not afforded when running product launches in huge groups.

After an airport collection in Catania, journalists enjoyed a welcome lunch before being introduced to the bikes & given time to set them up. Then, a quick shake-out ride (~35km / 1000m) in the dusty hills ending with a quick road descent down to Naxos for dinner & drinks.

Then came the main event. Following an in-depth product presentation over breakfast, we left the agriturismo and headed for the volcano. Some of the hardest riding we've ever done saw us climb around 1800m in 50km, much of it on loose volcanic ash. Breathtakingly beautiful, and also incredibly painful.

The group ended having a fairly eventful dinner in Francavilla di Sicilia (where some of The Godfather II was filmed, no less) whereby small strips of very nice steak were hand fed into the open mouths of waiting journalists, like little expectant baby seagulls. The less said about that, the better. But there is video evidence.

After one too many grappas... we bowled home and went to bed. Then woke up and did it all over again with the second group.

Special shout-out to the local tour guide, Danilo, for some exceptional hosting and for introducing us to Catanian Seltz, one of the most refreshing drinks we've ever tried (it's literally sea salt, lemon juice, and fizzy water... just trust us...)

"The team at PaceUp Media yet again put on an outstanding product launch. The Palta 3 event in Sicily was, without a doubt, one of the most unique launches I've attended in my 13 years as a tech reporter. Ollie and the team had everything from booking flights to the onsite organisation running silky smooth. The team really impressed with the details too, they understand the needs of us reporters on site and accommodate these without worry. Whenever an email drops in my inbox for a launch or event from the PaceUp guys, I know it's an easy decision to attend."
